As a member of my university's choir, I had the chance to go on tour to the New England States, and one of the nights we had some free time to spend in Boston. Unfortunately, I hadn't done my food homework. Fortunately, I was with a friend who had a place in mind.
So, the three of us hopped on the Boston metro and headed to Harvard Square. After walking around the university, getting yelled at by security guards (they don't appreciate people riding the statues), eating some dinner (tasty Chinese food from a place next to the Harvard Bookstore), and asking directions of a couple strangers, we finally found Crema Cafe. The Crema Cafe is a nice two story coffee shop with a rustic and homey feel to it. Everything is made out of wood, the entire menu is drawn on in chalk, and the paintings on the wall are of nature and coffee grounds. As nice as the cafe's atmosphere was, it had the most interesting sounding and vilest drink I've ever had.
Chaider - a combination of chai tea and apple cider. It sounds like "chunder", which is what I want to do when I drink it and which is what I now refer to it as. Now, by themselves hot chai and hot cider are delicious, but for some reason when they are combined their unholy combination is anything but. It's very acidic, has a distinct flavor of bilge, and leaves a nasty aftertaste. I tried to like it, really I did. I added sugar and took several sips, hoping that maybe it would grow on me, but it just wouldn't. It wasn't until later that we found out that it tastes better when cold. So, if you do decide to visit Crema Cafe, stay away from the Chaider or at least wait for it to get cold before you drink it.
The other thing I got from Crema Cafe was one of their carrot cakes, which was delicious, especially compared to the Chaider. It was a nice palette cleanser after my beverage. If I were in the area again, I might stop by for a cup of tea or some more carrot cake, but I would avoid the Chaider.
Stay abso-foodie-licious!
